Konon Open Letter to Education Minister

dear minister,
first of all, i'm a college dropout. i took up TESL in one of the most politicised state university in the country. i had my share of not eating for a week. survived on cigarettes and teh o. i had my share of bad university managements. and yes, my grammar is bad. due to financial reason i had to quit my studies. bagi peluang kat adik-adik perabis duit mak.

i have a few issue to address: our education system (sucks). i'll let you know first that i'm never fond of politicians. i never like how they run the system (education). these issues i will go through with you through questions. and a few solutions to that. our problems lies in the early stage of learning and up to higher education. i might write everything here but i too have a life to live.

1. why didn't it worked?
you see politicians says a lot of things. they never bother to check. unless there's a possibility of losing faces. but i doubt there's a lot of you still bother of losing faces. like PPSMI (i'm a fan of it), one day you want these kids to learn everything in english, the next day you don't. you had to give in to parents yang anak mereka memang tak tahu english. my question to you on PPSMI is "are you sure with what you're doing?".

i have a lot of friends who had troubles learning in universities since the chemistry chart they learned at school was in malay. dah masuk universiti satu hal pula semua bahasa inggeris. i'm a fan of PPSMI. it will help in later years.

but why didn't it worked? the answer is easy: you should've start it with the new batch of standard 1 kids the following year. not abruptly change everything in the middle of the fucking year and expect everybody to adapt peacefully. orang bodoh pun boleh tahu if you want to build a house, you build it on a new land. not on top of somebody else's house. but yeah, my answer to my question above is "you don't know what you're doing". to me you're randomly picked to run the minsitry. asal result belajar dulu cantik then you belong there. bullshit. YOU. NEVER. TEACH.

orang yang tak pernah mengajar or belajar methodology mengajar tak akan nampak masalah education.

this here, we need to change. the seat belongs to someone who have taught before. not random politicians.

politicians are the root of our problems.

2. how did the kids learn at school?
i too went to school. i was never good at numbers. i failed my advance math and i studied modern math just to get a D for SPM. i hate math. entah bila saya nak ukur diameter bola futsal sebelum bermain. but yeah. i was never given the oppurtunity to learn what i'd like to learn: art (especially) and geography. you see i scored an A for my georaphy in my PMR and when i started form 4, there is no geography class. what a bummer. Art was something that i wanted to do. but i was there macam lembu, kena tarik sana sini was in an account class. apejadahlahweh? but it did help when i'm running my small business today, the accounting.

i bet you never heard of the 8 types of intelligence. i first heard of it in college, its a theory:
1)linguistic
2)logical
3)musical
4)kinesthetic
5)interpersonal (the asshole, suka belajar seorang diri)
6)intrapersonal
7)naturalistic (something to do with crocs and frogs and trees)
8)visual

so yeah, these types of learning bukan semua orang ada semuanya at the same time. not everyone is linguistic and logical. and that is pandai with language and numbers/science. most of us memang ada either 1: linguistic OR logical. to those yang bengap matematik macam saya ini will always find it hard to learn things that have anything to do with numbers. call it rejection if you want. i just use math to count money. my question to you here is: why the hell did i spent 2 years learning ad math?

i should've learn georaphy, art or how to knit a sweater or something like that. i should've focused on what i can do instead of what i can't do. i already how to count money. why do the teachers want me to know how to kira diameter bumi or kira sudut tiga segi? ok, i might need that kira sudut tiga segi since there's a minor renovation i need to run in the next few weeks.

the system just gave the oppurtunity for shitty motivational speakers to make money. how is that? my mom sent me to a motivational speaker sebab i was not good in math. cuz my learning method is wrong or some shit like that. come on. i'm just not good with math. why force me? why force kids as young as i, who just want to impress ladies with my made up british accent, to learn numbers? do i need to count their lady moustache to impress them? come on. this is the source of the 3rd problem. but let me finish problem number 2 first.

you see if you knew these 8 intelligences you might as well screen every kids at school masa mereka baru nak start sekolah form 3 and give them the chance to focus on what they can do instead of what they can't. biarlah mereka belajar seni. biarlah mereka focus dengan menjahit. or buat kerja kayu and learn what they want to learn. don't push them to learn what they have no interest in.

tak semua orang pandai. tak semua orang boleh fokus semua benda. but still, everybody deserve a chance to do what they want to do. to be what they want to be.

i could've been a artist if i was given the chance to express my art. i still do now, have the chance. but i took the turn on becoming a musician instead. maybe next year i'll start painting again. maybe you should come to my small cafe and see what i painted on the wall. its noe fucking gallagher.

3. why didn't the kids learn.
this is 1 hell of a big issue. kenapa kelas memekak? kenapa bila cikgu masuk pun still kucar kacir kelas? dah buat baik pun hasilnya sama. jawapannya senang. sebab mereka benci subjek. pernah dengar murid taknak belajar english sebab cikgu pernah hempuk dengan buku? pernah dengar murid taknak belajar matematik sebab matematik bosan nak mampus?

so you heard. macam mana kalau encik menteri yang tak sukakan seni masuk kelas seni. nak melukis bola atas kertas pun rasa menyampah je kan? sama la juga dengan kami yang tak suka english/matematik/sains ni.
bosan.

to fix this problem we need to work together. ministry and teachers.

but yeah, i went to a few teaching methodology classes. teachers should have "crowd control" skills. should know how to handle kids. patut mencuba untuk menarik minat dengan aktiviti-aktiviti menarik dalam kelas. bukan just datang masuk kelas, amik kapur (djaman saya) tulis benda atas papan hitam and suruh murid-murid salin. memang la sangap kelas kau cikgu oi. belambak aktiviti ada. do you want to teach and nurture or do you want to makan gaji buta. kalau tak larat, berenti kerja. senang.

as for the minsitry side. wajibkanlah sekolah ni campur aduk semua pelajar. janglah campak budak yang kurang pandai semua dalam satu kelas. memang memekak la semua. there will always be 1 kid with bad influence. seorang je dah cukup dah untuk kucar-kacirkan satu kelas. kenapa yang pandai harus bercampur dengan yang pandai je? bukankah sepatutnya yang pandai ni patut bantu yang kurang pandai. biar mereka mingle sesama mereka didalam kelas. kenapa masa rehat kita akan nampak puak pandai berkumpul 1 tempat dan yang kurang pandai duduk 1 tempat lain? geng dengan kelas masing-masing je. ini mudah. sangatlah mudah. you just need to start.

if we carry on with the current system on this kita akan nampak yang pandai akan menjadi makin pandai, yang tak pandai akan jadi mendatar. no, mereka takkan jadi lagi tak pandai. bodoh ke ape? semua benda ada lawannya. hitam putih, laki perempuan, pandai dan kurang. bila ada balance maka akan ada keharmonian. nak belajar pun tak stress.

these we need to change. sekolah tempat belajar macam-macam selain akademik. jangan jadikan hidup berpuak one of it.

4. kenapa ada pendidikan sivik? mana pergi pendidikan seni?
to me personally, pendidikan sivik ni ada semata-mata nak menaikkan semangat kenegaraan untuk murid yang non-malays. since malay dah ada buku sejarah. macam-macam dalam buku subjek sejarah cerita tentang semangat melayu je lebih. yang cina nak bangga dengan subjek sejarah pun takat yap ah loi je, yang india... sami veloo?

i don't how did you see that this will achieve what you what to achieve. but subjek sivik adalah subjek buang masa. should've just use proper "sejarah" untuk membangkitkan semangat kenegaraan. macam how the chinese finally lawan komunis lepas agong bagi kerakyatan kepada bangsa cina yang datang dari mainland masa tu. subjek sivik adalah subjek buang masa sebab subjek ini dah potong jalan kelas seni.

oh i remember masa kementerian tukar balik everything to malay. i look up at my new schedule. they sure extended the english period. not surprising at all lepas nampak masa pendidikan jasmani dengan pendidikan seni telah di singkatkan. oh well, we never really had the chance to express our emotions through arts anyway.

pendidikan sivik = buang masa

sama macam di sekolah. murid-murid habis ditekan dengan matematik, sains, bahasa inggeris. habis semua masa digunakan untuk belajar akademik. most of them were never given the chance to release their stress at school. and that is through art or sports. kesian saya tengok kelas dahlia, pendidikan jasmani pun kena bedal belajar matematik. none of them were given the chance to take up a pencil and draw something. tipulah kalau encik menteri tak pernah ada buku conteng masa sekolah. mesti ada. why did we have those? reason nya technically adalah untuk release stress. tanpa sedar.

kalau saya cikgu seni, saya akan suruh murid lukis muka cikgu yang mereka tak suka. semua rahsia mereka akan saya simpan. saya takkan marah kalau mereka lukis muka saya. sebab itulah caranya budak-budak melepaskan stress. instead of memekak dalam kelas dan buat malas.

5.i should get on with my life. i'll write more to you later. hopefully one of my teaching friends that are radical with their methods and philosphy will take your seat one day. they've seen it, they've done it. not like tuan menteri yang sekarang atau yang sebelum tuan.

hopefully we'll finally see the day where politics will never get involve in education.

hopefully the one at the helm bukanlah professor bebal makan gaji buta.

one day, maybe.
